Somatic Experiencing (SE)
Understanding Trauma as a Physical Experience
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-based approach to healing that views trauma as something the nervous system holds onto – not just an emotional or mental event. Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, SE is rooted in the idea that when we face overwhelming experiences, our bodies may not complete their natural stress responses. Over time, this can show up as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or even difficulty regulating emotions.
Rather than focusing on talk or analysis alone, SE guides individuals to gently notice physical sensations – tightness, trembling, numbness, warmth – that may be linked to unresolved trauma. These sensations offer a subtle but powerful entry point into healing, allowing the body to speak the language of past experience and finally resolve what was left unfinished.
A Gentle Path to Reclaiming Balance
The process of SE is slow and intentional, helping people reconnect with their internal sense of safety without becoming overwhelmed. By supporting the completion of the body’s natural stress cycles, SE enables the release of long-held survival energy and restores self-regulation.
This approach takes inspiration from how animals instinctively recover from threat – shaking off the stress, rather than storing it. As people move through SE, they often find a renewed capacity for resilience, greater emotional steadiness, and relief from symptoms that once felt inescapable.
